BRC was originally the abbreviation of British Retail Consortium, a retail association in the UK, established in 1992. To implement its standard business operations, a wholly-owned company "BRC Trading Ltd." was established in 1996. After launching the first version of food standard in 1998, BRC Trading Ltd. received support from numerous retailers and suppliers, subsequently expanded the BRC series of standards globally, namely BRC Global Standard (BRCGS). In 2016, after being acquired by LGC Group, the meaning of BRC changed to "Brand Reputation through Compliance", and BRCGS, as the brand name, became part of LGC ASSURE.


BRCGS sets the benchmark for good manufacturing practices in areas such as food safety (including pet food for households and livestock feed), packaging materials, storage and distribution, consumer goods, agents and brokers, retail, gluten-free, plant-based and ethical trade, and helps assure customers that the company's products are safe, legal, of high quality and authentic.


The BRCGS series of standards have gained global recognition in the food and non-food industries. It is among the first batch of benchmark standards recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). Obtaining BRCGS certification can help enterprises more easily enter the international market.
